Please note: This is a Fixed Term Contract (employed) for 12 Months.

The IP Network Designer will report to the IP Architecture Team Lead within the UKS&S Core Engineering Design Team.

The IP Network Designer role will work both alone and with other IP Network Designers within multi-disciplined technology teams to design and deliver complex mission critical voice and data systems within MSI UKS&S. The systems may be used directly by our customers or by UKS&S teams to deliver Managed Services to our customers. The IP Network Designer will work in the post sales phases of projects and may support multiple projects in parallel. There may also be a requirement to occasionally provide support to pre-sales activities or other internal teams.

It is expected that the IP Network Designer maintain a close relationship with the following Airwave teams,

  • Integration Team,
  • Test Team,
  • Service Design & Introduction,
  • Operational Support,
  • In addition, the IP Network Designer will be expected to search out and form relationships with relevant MSI global product and engineering teams where appropriate.

    Key responsibilities:

    The IP Network Designer roles own/manage the following activities;

    Provide architectural vision for long term IP Network related strategic goals. Technical Design Authority for IP networks within UKMS Be subject matter expert (SME) for the IP Network design within UKMS, both internally within Motorola and externally with customer and suppliers. Development, delivery and the maintenance of High Level Designs (HLD) Development, delivery and the maintenance Low Level Design Documentation (LLD) and configuration templates. Leading Design Reviews Preparing project information (design presentation, cost estimates to deliver the solution) Presenting solution designs to customers and senior internal stakeholders.

    There are no line management responsibilities.


    Basic Requirements

    Achieves a level of results typically associated with a person having a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in IP network design. Has achieved a progression of demonstrated experience.

    The Network Designer will have a strong background in the design/deployment of IP Network systems solutions within the mobile communications or IT industry. This experience must include working within a complex project environment.

    The following skills are considered essential:

  • Strong demonstrable background in designing high availability IP network architectures
  • Strong demonstrable knowledge on IP Network routing protocols (, OSPF) and QoS related technologies.
  • Thorough understanding of technical security design within IP networking (IPSec, Firewall).
  • Experience of complex project integration including interface definition
  • Good communication skills and confidence to present solutions to internal and external customers
  • The following skills are considered highly desirable:

  • Knowledge of IP Network related standards e.g IEEE, IETF etc
  • Secure remote access solutions
  • Network monitoring & performance reporting
  • Networking related certifications from any leading company such as Cisco (e.g at least to CCDP and CCNP certification level).
  • Cisco ISE, ACI and DNA application deployment experience.
  • Knowledge or experience in the following areas would be beneficial;

  • Network OSS integration support for fault management and alarm correlation
  • Knowledge of Mobile network platforms and services
  • ITIL, TOGAF, TM Forum Frameworx including eTOM , Agile, PMP ,
  • Experience of working in a pre-sales environment (, customer presentations, etc)
